in the world. Wonderful
right? Or do you still have reservations about that flight.
Luckily you can fly pretty much guilt free because now you have the
option of
effectively for reducing your CO2 emissions to zero. It's called
"offsetting", or "carbon offsets".
Where to start?
Right here with a list of
organizations that comply with the CDM
Gold Standard
for carbon credits.
Just click, automatically
calculate your credits, pay and your on your
way to a guilt free holiday.
So what is offsetting?
The idea behind offsetting is fairly straightforward.
Let's have a
look at a common case - flying, in this case from Vancouver Canada to
Ecuador - to see how offsetting works.
ADD
5.2
metric tonnes |
A
return flight from Vancouver
to Ecuador results in the equivalent of 5.2 metric tonnes of CO2
entering the atmosphere (that's more then the emissions from driving an
average car for a whole year!). |
 |
SUBTRACT
5.2 metric
tonnes |
The fee
you pay to an offsets
program supports projects like wind power, that will reduce CO2 by the
same amount your flight creates, effectively cancelling out or
"offsetting" your emissions. |
 |
EQUALS
0 metric tonnes (and
one
happy turtle) |
So
off you go to Galapagos to visit and one happy turtle who will
congratulate
you for effectively reduced the total emissions from your flight to
zero.
