| Itinerary |
Day 1 DelhiLeave the bustling streets of Delhi behind and jump on board an overnight train. Travel northwards towards the Himalayan foothills. Train travel is a great way to meet the locals. Be sure to grab some snacks beforehand and share your travelling picnic with new local friends. Days 2-3 DharamsalaKnown colloquially as 'Little Lhasa', Dharamsala is a stunning scene of spinning prayer wheels, fluttering prayer flags, spectacular mountain views and cultivated fields. The resulting gorgeous ambience promotes the message of peace and harmony. Discover ancient Tibetan arts at the Norbulinka Institute, visit an ashram complex and browse the Museum of Kangra Art. Days 4-5 AmritsarEnjoy an evening visit to the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. Next stop is a sobering visit to Jallian Wala Bagh, a memorial commemorating the 2,000 Indians killed or injured by the British in the 1919. Then, watch the exaggerated pomp and ceremony of the changing of the guards and the lowering of the flags ritual at the India-Pakistan border. Days 6-7 ShimlaStretched along a crescent-shaped ridge at an altitude of over 2,100 m, Shimla was the summer capital during the British colonial period in India. This is the perfect place to explore on foot, so lace up those boots and visit the colourful bazaars and temples. Hike to the Jakhu Temple and perhaps even head out to Summer Hill or the Chadwick Falls. Days 8-9 DelhiThe adventure comes full circle on the return to Delhi. Enjoy a final day with plenty of time for shopping, sightseeing or relaxing.
