Days 1-2 VeniceWhile sightseeing in Venice, discover an enchanting maze of streets and alleyways, tiny bridges, and winding canals that form a watery tapestry throughout the city. On a walking tour, pass many of Venice's attractions including the Rialto Bridge, the Basilica di San Marco and the Bridge of Sighs. Board a traghetto to cross the Grand Canal, stride through pigeon flocks in the Piazza San Marco or browse the shops for carnival masks in one of the most iconic cities in Italy. Days 3-4 GubbioTake a funicular up the steep slopes of Mt Ingino to a hilltop basilica, in which lies the mummified body of Saint Ubaldo, the patron saint of Gubbio. Hike through high pastures to enjoy memorable views over the countryside. To make the most of the encapsulating mountain vistas, dine al fresco at a streetside cafe, maybe sampling the local tartufo and porcini steaks. Days 5-6 Assisi/SpelloTravel to the home of Saint Francis, birthplace of the Franciscan order, and one of Italy's most important religious towns. Uncover a plethora of impressive sites, including the Basilica di Santa Chiara and the Basilica di San Francesco. Embark on a day trip to Spello, a town perched on the side of Mt Subasio and scattered with weathered Roman monuments. Enjoy a tasty drop or two of the region's famous vino at a local enoteca. Days 7-8 RomeVisit Rome and encounter one of the oldest civilisations in the world. Delight in an unrivalled fusion of ancient surroundings and modern life, which evokes a sense of nostalgia like no other city. Channel the spirits of gladiators on a visit to the Colosseum and the Pantheon or stroll to the Spanish Steps and sup an espresso in the swelter of the afternoon sunlight.
