| Itinerary |
Days 1-2 RomeDiscover Rome, a city with everything from gladiators to gelati and the perfect place to begin this family adventure in Italy. Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain or watch for centurions outside the Colosseum. Then, climb into the Time Elevator to learn about the city's vibrant history, feast on hearty Italian fare and chat with animated locals in the busy streets of this 'Eternal City'. Days 3-5 Lucca/Pisa/FlorenceMake tracks to the medieval Tuscan town of Lucca. Take a trip to Florence, a haven for art and history lovers and the perfect place to be introduced to the world's great artists. Visit Pisa to see the iconic Baptistry and Duomo and, of course, the gravity-defying leaning tower. While in Lucca, perhaps hire bicycles to explore the city's ancient ramparts or shop for fresh local produce in the markets. Days 6-8 La Spezia/Cinque TerrePull on the walking boots and set off along Italy's legendary Cinque Terre, a series of villages connected by a coastal path. Walk through a breathtaking landscape of green hills peppered with olive groves and vineyards, dramatic cliff faces and sparkling azure seas. Wander through each distinctive village before more refreshing ocean swims and perhaps a reward of gelati. In free time, why not don chef's hats and learn how to make pesto. Days 9-11 Stresa/Lake MaggioreContinue the journey by train to the 19th-century town of Stresa in the Italian lakes region. Take a day tour to crystal-clear Lake Maggiore and sail past the beautiful Borromeo Isles, picnicking in one of the fishing villages. Maybe visit the markets and churches in one of the lakeside hamlets or take a ride in a cable car to the top of nearby mountains for panoramic views of the Italian Alps. Days 12-14 VeniceTravel to Venice and enjoy getting lost in the maze of canals, lanes and backstreets of Italy's romantic lagoon city. Take in the famous Grand Canal, the Doge's Palace and the Rialto Bridge. Perhaps pay a visit to the Basilica di San Marco, which is filled with sculptures and other religious relics, or pile into a gondola for a different perspective of the canals. Choose to explore the Rialto Food Markets and nearby pescheria (fish market) before concluding this unforgettable family holiday.
