Once a main port of Spanish colonies, Campeche endured years of pirate attacks, which led to the construction of thick ramparts that extended out to sea. When the sun has lowered, stroll down the malecon (waterfront) in time for sunset. Days 4-5 PalenqueHead inland to an ancient Maya site. Built 1,300 years ago, Palenque holds an enchanting, mystical charm. Spend two days exploring the fascinating ruins of the area. Days 6-8 San Cristobal de las CasasAn anthropologist's dream, San Cristobal de Las Casas is seeped in historical significance. Perched on the highlands of Chiapas, the mist-shrouded city is a sight to behold. Day 9 OcosingoPay homage to the ruins of Tonina, the last of the classic Maya cities. Perhaps go horse riding to explore the area more intimately. Day 10 Agua AzulImagine white, frothy water cascading off the cliffs into a turquoise pool surrounded by lush jungle - Agua Azul is all that and more. Take time to explore the verdant surrounds before venturing forth to Misol-Ha, where it's possible to cool off amid the lush vegetation. Day 11 Cenote AzulLuxuriate in the world's biggest water hole. The Maya considered these waters to be sacred and the intense, blue colour of the water is sure to entice swimmers. Days 12-13 Playa del CarmenThe Tulum ruins boast a location that's hard to beat: tropical Caribbean coastline with breathtaking vistas. Revel in Playa del Carmen's beach and nightlife. Day 14 Isla MujeresFerry to a paradise island that's surrounded by green-blue waters and coral reefs. Water activities are the order of the day here, so look forward to plenty of swimming or snorkelling. Day 15 CancunSqueeze in some sightseeing before bidding fellow adventurers farewell.
