Day 1 CancunBienvenidos and welcome to Mexico! Visit the bars, beaches and boulevards that Cancun is famous for - or simply blissing out in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean is also a perfectly acceptable pastime in Cancun! Day 2 Chichen Itza / MeridaVisit the Mayan pyramids at Chichen Itza. A fusion of religion, architecture and science, the Chichen ruins are one of the most impressive of the ancient Mayan sites. The highlight is El Castillo (Great Castle), a 91-stepped pyramid known for its amazing carved snakes. After a tour, travel to the Yucatan capital of Merida. Days 3-4 PalenqueThe lofty Palenque pyramid is another example of fine Mayan architecture. Explore this ancient site, nestled in the middle of a lush, tropical jungle. Days 5-6 San Cristobal de las CasasTravel further south to San Cristobal de las Casas and soak up a cooler climate. Perhaps take an optional day tour to San Juan Chamula church or Sumidero Canyon. Day 7 PanajachelCross the border into Guatemala and head for a relaxing rendezvous at Panajachel. Set on the banks of the vast Lake Atitlan, Panajachel is a great jumping off point for a host of outdoor activities. Daredevils might choose to admire the awesome volcanic vistas on a paragliding adventure! Also take the opportunity to experience the traditional Mayan culture, which is still practised by Panajachel residents. Day 8 San Jorge La LagunaEnjoy an overnight homestay with a family in San Jorge La Laguna. Try to engage the locals with a few words of Spanish and share a traditional meal of corn, rice and beans. Days 9-10 Chichicastenango / AntiguaMarvel at a cacophony of sound in the bustling 'Chichi' markets before continuing on through the Guatemalan Highlands. Stroll along cobblestoned streets, discover a myriad of Antigua attractions, try a spot of salsa dancing or embark on a tour to Pacaya Volcano.
