Days 1-2 DiliThough retaining the feel of a Portuguese outpost, Dili is beginning to forge its own identity. We take in the sights of the city outskirts on a half day tour, leaving plenty of time to wander the local weaving markets and enjoy an evening stroll along the waterfront. Days 3-4 MaubisseHead out of the city by 4WD, winding through hillside coffee plantations and cornfields on our way to the market village of Hato Builiko, a great place to meet the locals. The next day hike up Mt Ramelau where fresh mountain air, scenic vistas and a statue of the Virgin Mary await. Days 5-6 SuaiTravel through lush rainforest and farmland to Suai, renowned for its traditional weaving and soccer-mad locals. Days 7-9 Atauro IslandAfter a scenic drive, our boat ride across the Wetar Strait offers a chance to see whales and dolphins. Stay in simple beach huts on Atauro Island, part of an ecotourism project that supports the local community, and swim and snorkel to your heart's content. Days 10-11 BaucauExperience traditional life of the Timorese as we head east into a lush area of rice paddies, peanut farms and vegetable fields. The following day we drive to Venilale along a winding road flanked by huge old trees and take a trek through the forest to Mt Ariana. Days 12-13 Los PalosLearn how soap-making and basketry are contributing to community development in tropical Los Palos. Keep an eye out for traditional spirit houses, freshwater crocodiles and forested peaks as we head east to Tutuala. Days 14-15 DiliRelish the taste of local coffee while admiring the artistry of signature hand-woven 'tais' in any of Dili's colourful markets.
