Day 1 BangkokGrab a tuk-tuk and get exploring. With so much to see and do in this electrifying city, it's worth arriving a couple of days early. Days 2-3 Kanchanaburi/River KwaiSpend a memorable day in this infamous area where thousands died building the Death Railway. For a change of atmosphere, head to one of Thailand's most beautiful national parks for a dip beneath Erawan Falls. Day 4 AyuthayaAdmire the Buddhist monuments, ancient temples and royal ruins of this once-majestic city. Set out to discover the area on foot, or hire a bike for further explorations in the surrounding countryside. In the evening, board an overnight train to Chiang Mai. Day 5 Chiang MaiAn Intrepid favourite, Chiang Mai brims with impressive temples, vibrant markets and delicious food. In free time, why not hire a bike and cycle around the crumbling city walls? Days 6-7 Hilltribe TrekGet off the beaten track with a hike through Thailand's remote northern hills. See the surrounds from a different perspective on the back of an elephant. Stay overnight in simple traditional huts with local families - an amazing chance to learn about their fascinating cultures and day-to-day lives. Days 8-9 Chiang MaiTime for a well-deserved shower, massage or maybe even a cooking class. Shopaholics can get their fix at the lively Night Bazaar. With souvenirs bought it's then time to return to Bangkok on an overnight train. Day 10 BangkokEnjoy free time back in the capital. Ride the Skytrain, eat spicy som tam at a street stall or explore Ko Ratanakosin, the ancient royal district.
