| Itinerary |
Day 1 Siem Reap/Angkor WatTravel from Siem Reap to the temples of Angkor. Start explorations at Angkor Wat, easily the most famous and best-preserved of the temples. We then move on to Angkor Thom city visiting Bayon, with its 54 towers. Finish the morning with a stop at the very photogenic South Gate of Angkor Thom City. Lunch is Khmer style in a village surrounded by rice paddies. Afterwards visit the beautiful Ta Prohm temple made famous by the Tomb Raider film. If time permits finish the day climbing one of the oldest buildings in the Angkor complex, the brick temple of Pre Rup. Day 2 Angkor Wat/Siem ReapLeaving Angkor behind, take a trip through the countryside to the small village of Kbal Speanand see rural Cambodian life in action. Then embark on an easy jungle trek to the River of a Thousand Lingas. See Hindu sculptures which were carved into the river's granite banks and bed more than a thousand years ago.Next stop is the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity which is home to a collection of animals that have been saved from trafficking including gibbons, monkeys, anteaters, storks, snakes, giant ibis, turtles, and the bright eyed and cuddly lorus. Afterwards enjoy a tasty Khmer lunch before heading to visit the temple of Banteay Srei. If time and weather permits, return to explore the lovely Banteay Kdei temple a former monastic complex which is largely unrestored; and enjoy sunset at the picturesque reservoir of Sras Srang. Day 3 Siem Reap/Tonle SapExplore Siem Reap by remork. Then head through the countryside to Tonle Sap Lake.
The Tonle Sap one of the worlds most productive bodies of fresh water. Each year, millions of fish come to spawn in the seasonally flooded forest surrounding the lake, attracting a myriad of water birds as well as people, who have settled in villages along the shores and who live with the rhythm of the water. Take a boat trip around the lake to see floating villages and get a taste for life ruled by monsoonal rains and water-based agriculture. Take the back roads on your return to town, seeing a side of Siem Reap seldom explored by visitors. The afternoon is free to explore the local markets and buy some special souvenirs or to do some final sightseeing.
