Days 1 Arrive Phnom PenhStart at Wat Phnom, where an ancient monastery is situated upon the only hill in the city. Spot monkeys, have your fortune told and perhaps feed Sambo the elephant. Afterwards take a cyclo tour of the impressive French Khmer colonial buildings of Phnom Penh. See the site of the filming of City of Ghosts staring Matt Dillon and Gerard Depardieu, the old post office building, and the photogenic Royal Palace and National Museum. Stop to wander around Wat Ounaloum and explore Central Market. If there is time, head to the Muslim Fishing village on the Tonle Sap River. Enjoy a lunch of traditional Khmer delicacies at a not for profit organization set up to assist Cambodia's street children. See students learning traditional dances at the Apsara Arts Association. There's time for shopping at the sprawling Russian Market, a labyrinth of stalls selling everything from CDs and DVDs to silks, crafts, jewellery and more.Hear about Cambodia's connection with France and Vietnam at the Independence Monument, and the Cambodia/Vietnam friendship monument. Finish with a walk on the riverfront at the Chatomok where the Tonle Bassac, Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers meet. In the early evening market stalls set up selling fried cockroaches, spiders, crickets and other culinary delights. Days 2 Depart Phnom PenhThe day starts by learning about the tragic and fascinating recent history of Cambodia. See the location where journalists camped out in 1975 on the eve of the Khmer Rouge takeover, and the ghostly building that has been left burnt-out and bullet-holed as it stood after the war. Confront Cambodia's tragic past, on a guided tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, then head out of the city to the Choueng Ek Memorial. Finish the morning by sampling some interesting Khmer snacks and exploring how recent history and politics continue to affect the lives of average Cambodians. In the afternoon explore Phnom Penh from the water on a cruise. See Khmer influenced buildings such as Wat Ounalom, the Royal Palace, and the Silver Pagoda meet French colonial buildings some renovated some ravaged by neglect and the war. Pass the floating fishing villages of mainly former Vietnamese folk who call the rivers home. At Mekong Island stop to see the silk weavers at work in the village. Explore a Buddhist temple and experience the simple life style of the local people.
