| Itinerary |
Days 1-2 BeijingBegin this grand adventure with a tour of the newly restored Temple of Heaven accompanied by a local guide. The remainder of the day is free to explore this remarkable city. Perhaps head to the nearby Hongqiao Market to track down a bargain, shop for fabric at the Xiushui Silk Market or catch a rickshaw to explore back lanes, byways and other hidden treasures. Make sure to leave time for Tiananmen Square, as walking around this huge meeting area is a remarkable experience. Perhaps find a local restaurant and indulge in a Peking duck dinner. Days 3-4 Beijing to LhasaThe new Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the highest in the world, climbing from 2,829m above sea level at Golmud to 3,641m at Lhasa. Its highest point is in the Tanggula Pass, just over 5,000m above sea level. Enjoy the journey in the comfort of a train equipped with a special oxygen system for those high ascents. Watch the spectacular scenery roll by and chat with locals in the dining car. Days 5-8 LhasaThe spiritual and political heart of Tibet, Lhasa is a colourful and moving place. Visit the breathtaking Potala Palace, an architectural marvel sitting at the top of the world. See waves of pilgrims prostrating themselves outside Jokhang Temple before browsing its market for Buddha images, juniper incense, turquoise jewellery, woodcarvings or carpets. Walk the holy Barkhor circuit with devout Tibetan Buddhists to get a sense of the history and traditions of these peaceful people. There is plenty of free time to soak up the grandeur of Lhasa.
