Day 1 Hong KongA fusion of East and West, Hong Kong is a glittering world of skyscrapers and shopping malls rising from the South China Sea. Dig a bit deeper and unearth fascinating markets, secluded beaches and serene temples. For those who arrive early, be sure to explore the Temple Street night market and take the Star Ferry across the harbour. Days 2-4 KunmingThe modern city of Kunming has some excellent markets tucked away in the quaint backstreets. The Tang dynasty pagodas are worth visiting, and there's a quiet spot tucked away in the gardens near the West Pagoda where people can meet to socialise and play mahjong. Days 5-6 JianshuiJoin locals and ride a public bus to Jianshui. Stroll through the ancient streets and see evidence of a rich history at every turn. Enjoy free time to explore the mansions, temples and villages in the surrounding areas. Days 7-10 Sapa/Hilltribe VillagesDiscover the strikingly different countryside of Vietnam. Start at the old French hill station of Sapa and trek through the extraordinary rural mountainscapes that are home to the friendly H'mong, Tay and Dzao people. Days 11-12 HanoiGet back to the fast pace of city life on an overnight train to Hanoi. Use free time to wander the tree-lined boulevards, shop for mementos in the Old Quarter or view Hanoi's famous water-puppet show.
